When the word cottage can seem inadequate for your holiday accommodation

£598 for three nights might seem a steep starting price for self-catering, but it depends what you get for the money. The Daily Mail sent a reporter off to explore the Landmark Trust's Tixall Gatehouse, and decided it was rather good value.

The Landmark Trust is a building preservation charity, established to rescue historic and architecturally interesting buildings and their surroundings from neglect and give them new life by letting them as places to experience for holidays.

Self catering for the extravagant

Looks like the Guardian can see the benefits of a cottage holiday. But not the kitchen. So a cottage, but not self-catering. Hmm . .

As usual when anything like this is in the press, the reader is left wondering how much of the glorious holiday they actually paid for themselves.

Cottage Holidays in Northumberland

At the opposite corner of England to Cornwall lies a county where the coast is no less dramatic, the beaches are golden, and there seems to be a dramatic castle around every turn in the coastal path. But the English are predisposed to head south for holidays, so Northumberland remains quiet and unspoilt even in the height of summer.

Although many people are aware of Holy Island, Bamburgh Castle and the Farne Islands (where seals bask in their thousands) there is an unknown Northumbria inland. So spectacular is the scenery here that it is one of our designated National Parks, and the market towns of Hexham and Morpeth rank highly on the "UK's most desirable places to live" surveys. At Alnwick, the Duchess of Nothumberland has spent millions restoring gardens and creating the ultimate fantasy - a whimsical tree house with an open fire. It's a restaurant, so an ideal place to amaze your children at lunch time, or leave them behind and share a romantic dinner.

Newcastle is in Lonely Planet's Top Ten cities in the world to have a night out, while by day you can choose between the abundance of shopping and Newcastle United's "cathedral on the hill", St James' Park.

An East coast county, Northumberland tends to be dry, but the winds can come in cold across the North Sea, so warm clothes should go in the suitcase, regardless of the time of year. Other than that, there is nothing to worry about. The local warmth and hospitality is legendary, and the few who have discovered the area tend to return.

CottageWorld currently lists over 200 holiday cottages in Northumbria. And for those hardcore southerners who believe everything up north is "grim", this video may help to change your mind . . .

Taming Technology

Cottage World is all about using technology to make the experience of finding a holiday cottage more straightforward. As part of that plan, we are encouraging as many owners as possible to upload details of their cottages. So it was lovely to get this feedback from a cottage owner:
As you know I have added my cottages to your website and just wanted to let you know how straightforward and simplistic it was.
If you spot anything on the site that could be improved, please don't hesitate to send a message and tell us about it. We want to make the site as good as it can be.

Lucky Dip!

The traditional way to choose a cottage has always started with the place. Well with tens of thousands of holiday cottages out there you have to start somewhere, and that is how the listings are organised.
Many people looking for their ideal cottage have found they are already booked, and have settled for second best (or worse) wherever they wanted to go.

Times have changed! The Cottage World Search means that instead of starting with a place, you can simply profile your ideal cottage. Does it have wheelchair access and wi-fi to keep in touch with work? Then it could be in Gloucestershire, the Lake District, or a host of other places.

Perhaps your ideal cottage has sea views, but an enclosed garden where the kids can let off steam without you worrying all the time. That search throws up 71 options for you to look at, from Cornwall to the Isle of Skye.

Try it for yourself. Enter some features you would really like on holiday and see where they might take you. Happy hunting!
